Titans wins 1st Basketball Men Title

Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias (CSAV) Titans clenched their first ever NOPSSCEA men’s basketball championship trophy on a convincing 82-64 victory over University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) Rams in the game 3 of the best-of-3 finals at STI West Negros University (STI WNU) gym on last Friday, November 17, 2017.

The Titans grabbed the first game on Tuesday at 76-62 but failed to get the coveted win for game two, 61-44, last Thursday, Nov. 16.

In game 3, the jam-packed venue exchanged cheers as both teams played fast balls in the first quarter but the usual gunner, Jeffrey Manday (#7), led the white shirts with the helpful rebounds of African import JR Essakadoualla (#11) while the Rams were heated up by the big men John Lorenz Toral (#10) and Patrick Dave Yulo (#17) to end the 1st quarter at 25-21 in favor of the Titans.

Madhay-Essakadoualla tandem continued to dominate the 2nd quarter to lead the half-time, 48-35, where the Rams struggled to drive baskets over the towering defense of the Titans.

The Victorias-based squad fully ruled the second half as they caged 21 points against only 13 of the Bacolod-based team in the 3rd quarter alone that closed at 72-48.

Jafet Claridad (#11) shortly came alive for the Rams in the last quarter after a highly needed pair of threes and the crucial steals with Stefano Ayuco’s (#15) impressive ball handling and crossovers but the Titans remained a force to reckon as Jeric Adorio (#18) and Carl Magbanua (#17) took turns on securing the Rams’ shooters from clear passage.

The blue-and-yellow jerseys eventually bowed to the Titans on the buzzer even as the former scored 16 against the 13 points of the latter.

Madhay led the scoreboard at 28 points followed by Essakadoulla’s 14 points. Other scorers were Magbanua – 11, Billy Rojo (#5) – 10, Adorio – 9, Vladimir Pangantihon (#4) – 4, John Loydn Pangantihon (#4) – 4 and Reymart Carano-o (#15) – 2.

Meanwhile, Toral carried his team with 16 points together with Claridad’s 13 points. Supporting crew were Ayuco – 12, Yulo – 10, Catague – 5, Bill Gerard Prado (#13) – 4, Leonard Michael Mustre (#14), Carl John Mejica (#8) – 2 and Gerard Raymond Dipol (#7) – 2.

Awarding ceremonies will be held at STI-WNU Gym on November 25, 2PM.
